Forcing stores that are losing money due to theft or high costs to continue operating is economic illiteracy that will just speed up their eventual bankruptcy. This policy will inevitably backfire and create worse food deserts, as no rational business owner would ever open a new grocery store in Seattle fearing they could be trapped there forever by mayoral decree.

Instead of addressing the root causes driving businesses out of Seattle, such as unchecked retail crime, this authoritarian approach punishes the victims of the city’s failed policies. The sheer hubris of believing a politician can simply command a private entity to keep the doors open when the business model has failed is a dangerous delusion that ignores basic reality.

The findings suggest that our need for 'inclusion' (meaning belonging, not today's twisted version) is rooted in our aversion to pain.

 

Anyone who's been rejected knows it can hurt. Social psychologist Naomi Eisenberger of the University of California, Los Angeles, and colleagues wondered if the metaphor of emotional pain had corporeal underpinnings.

Honest to god I actually watched about five minutes of this before I had to turn it off. This motherfucker is genuinely scary. But it's the Big Apple's problem, not mine. I'm okay with not going back in to the city anymore, even after having worked - and played there for as long as I did. The one takeaway I got from watching it was glaringly sickening. The re was not a single American flag to be seen anywhere on the stage. Not a one. In America;'s largest City.

At Zohran Mamdani's mayoral inauguration ceremony today, the flags of all five New York City boroughs were displayed prominently. The official flag of the City of New York was also present.

It's not just Florida where the meat prices are crazy, but...

 One frustrated shopper recently took to sociall nedia to air their grievances after picking up a prime tenderloin steak at a Publix store in Yulee, Florida. A photo of the package showed the meat priced at a jaw-dropping $61.49 - or $49.99 per pound. 'This is criminal,' the customer wrote.

 

They continued: 'Not only is this meat mediocre, it’s ridiculously priced. What the hell, Publix?! This is the store in Yulee, FL. Only tenderloin on the shelf at all.' Other users were equally shocked by the steep pricing. 'You can get a full ribeye or tenderloin dinner with table bread, 2 sides and softdrinks in Florida at a Outback, texas roadhouse or Longhorn for $26 - $31,' one wrote.

'Publix is wildly overpriced,' someone else chimed in.  Another said that meat isn't the only Publix product growing in price: 'If you think that's bad, a jar of Planters mixed nuts is going for almost $20. Mayo is pushing $10 a jar. Insane, and unsustainable.' Indeed, Publix might be losing its customers to other major grocers in the state - especially ALDI.

 

Publix is a privately held company that is primarily owned by its employees and former employees (about 80%), with the remainder owned by the founding Jenkins family.

FAFO - Trump's payback veto has the tribe on the warpath...

 The Miccosukee Reserved Area Amendments Act would have added the Osceola Camp, a small village of members of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, to the reservation in the Everglades. It would have also taken steps to protect the camp from flooding risks. Currently, the land is a special-use permitted area in Everglades National Park.

In the veto, Trump said the tribe "has actively sought to obstruct reasonable immigration policies that the American people decisively voted for when I was elected." The tribe is a plaintiff in a suit against the federal government and the state of Florida, arguing the state failed to conduct an environmental review on the land where Alligator Alcatraz is located. An environmental study is required to comply with federal laws.

 

The Osceola Camp is nothing more than a small, out of the way tourist trap that contributes nothing to region, has unlimited tax-free status, and, to be realistic, is a bit of a shithole. The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida owns a casino and is far from poor by any definition.

Florida gaming regulators are stepping up their fight against illegal casinos - and the numbers show it. The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) says its agents have seized $14.47 million and taken 6,725 illegal slot machines off the street during raids and enforcement actions in 2025. That's a huge jump from 2024, when the agency seized about $7.11 million and 1,287 machines.

Around here they were called 'Fish Games' for god-knows-what reason. They were unregulated and had payout ratios as low as 10% of play. Legalized casinos with a slot machine facility licensed by FGCC to maintain a payout percentage of no less than 85%.
