Revisiting Parent/Teacher night...

School districts across the country have begun testing AI-driven platforms and robotic assistants to manage growing class sizes and persistent teacher vacancies.
In several pilot programs launched around 2025, automated systems now handle scheduling, grading, and even introductory parent meetings. The move reflects broader efforts to cut costs while maintaining basic operations amid declining enrollment in education degree programs.
The stakes extend beyond logistics. Replacing human teachers with AI risks widening gaps in student engagement and emotional support, areas where algorithms still fall short. Parents and unions have raised alarms that automation prioritizes efficiency metrics over the nuanced judgment required in real classrooms. Lawmakers in multiple states are debating funding formulas that could accelerate or restrict these deployments.
I think it doesn't make sense unless you think the robots will do a better job than today's teachers - especially in inner-city public schools - are doing now. Focus on the four basic skills - reading, writing, arithmetic and history is almost non-existant any more. Our kids learn more from their smart phones than they do from their teachers - and that ain't sayin' much, is it?
