Before becoming one of the most recognizable progressives in Congress, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez worked as a bartender and waitress in New York. Now the Democratic congresswoman is taking aim at billionaires and artificial intelligence, warning that wealthy elites are preparing to hoard resources while AI destroys ordinary Americans’ livelihoods.
Speaking Sunday at a “Students vs. Billionaires” town hall in Ithaca, New York, Ocasio-Cortez declared, “What the elite want, and they’re already planning for it, is to hoard all of the resources for themselves as the world gets more and more physically unstable.” She then turned to AI, saying, “They want to wipe out all of our livelihoods.”
AOC went even further, claiming wealthy interests “want to make sure none of us have jobs” while keeping the financial rewards produced by AI. She also criticized the enormous amount of electricity used by AI and data centers and warned that Americans could become increasingly dependent on technology companies to perform tasks they once handled themselves.
Concerns about AI replacing or changing jobs are hardly limited to Ocasio-Cortez or the political left. The debate over AI now stretches from jobs and electricity prices to data centers, national security and whether Washington should impose tougher regulations on the rapidly growing industry.
