The ComicBooks.com Reading Room is a free online library of old comics that you read in your browser, one deep-zoomable page at a time. Open Culture pointed to it this week. The counter on the front page listed 20,109 books. The site promises "No login, no paywall, no catch."
The site sorts everything by genre, publisher, and decade. Romance is the largest genre with 3,590 books, ahead of westerns (2,648), funny animals (2,225), and humor (2,094). Horror has 748. The 1950s account for 9,858 of the books and the 1940s for another 6,243, so most of the library dates from before 1960.
The site says it runs every raw scan through descreening, AI upscaling, and color cleanup before it publishes the scan. It also says it hosts every page on its own servers. The site deliberately leaves out characters that are still licensed. The shelves hold Cat-Man, Skyman, and Bulletman. The reading room has no Batman and no Superman.
