Ever have an Italian Hot Dog - Jersey style?

An Italian hot dog is a New Jersey specialty featuring a deep-fried hot dog in an Italian roll, topped with a mix of fried peppers, onions, and potatoes, often with mustard. Invented in Newark, NJ, by Jimmy Buff's in 1932, it's a regional variation distinct from other hot dogs, using a round "pizza bread" roll and hearty, savory toppings instead of the typical bun and condiments.

Key components:
  • Hot Dog: A deep-fried or grilled frankfurter.
  • Roll: A round Italian "pizza bread" roll, not a standard hot dog bun.
  • Toppings: A generous pile of sautéed or fried green peppers, onions, and potatoes (often parboiled and then crisped).
  • Condiment: Deli mustard is the traditional choice. Ketchup is optional
  • How it's made
  • Potatoes: Peel and slice potatoes, then fry or roast them until tender and browned.
  • Peppers & Onions: Sauté sliced bell peppers and onions in olive oil until soft.
  • Hot Dog: Grill or deep-fry the hot dog.
  • Assembly: Place the hot dog in the roll, top with the potato and pepper/onion mixture, and add mustard and ketchup.

  1. Jimmy Buff's as a must-go in the early 70s just after the Pub at Seton Hall or Paul's Tavern closed remains a pleasant memory. I think I still have the scars from biting into a fresh load from the fryer... Thanks for the memory.

There is one closer to me in Kenilworth but we prefer to get it from the original west orange Location. My brother and I grew up in Irvington and I remember as kids my mother used to take us to Jimmy Buffs for Hotdogs And to go to Kless diner on Saturday morning for breakfast. Thank you for always giving us some great memories,
