Bobby Caldwell was nominated (and in some accounts, initially awarded or selected) for Billboard's "Best New Black Artist" (or "Best New Black Artist of the Year") category in 1979 following the massive success of his breakout hit single "What You Won't Do for Love".
Because of his smooth, soulful R&B vocal delivery, many listeners and radio programmers assumed Caldwell was Black. His record label initially kept his face off promotional materials - using a silhouette of a man sitting on a park bench for the album cover - so the song would get airplay on R&B stations without racial bias. Once it was publicly revealed that Caldwell was a white guy, the nomination or award recognition was withdrawn or adjusted.
Here he is singing it on the Soul Train Awards show in 2013. Despite the early confusion, Caldwell earned deep respect in Black musical culture, became known as a quintessential "blue-eyed soul" artist, and saw his music heavily sampled by generations of hip-hop and R&B producers.
