This colorized (by me) image shows the public hanging of Rainey Bethea on August 14, 1936, in Owensboro, Kentucky. I colorized to make it appear like today's times - if you don't pay any attention to the straw hats, that is.
It shows the last legally sanctioned public execution in the United States. An estimated 20,000 spectators gathered to watch the execution on the riverfront. The spectacle surrounding the execution — including a carnival - like atmosphere and heavy media coverage, led to widespread public backlash and prompted Kentucky (and other states) to end public executions, moving capital punishment behind prison walls.
Now, the next Execution in the US is scheduled to be the Fort Hood shooters' and it is scheduled to be livestreamed on the internet. The Pentagon’s move would allow the public to witness an execution for the first time in almost a century.
would want to watch crazy shit like this?
