AI is killing their A+ potential, according to this new report. More than three fourths of teens use AI to do their schoolwork - but it’s causing test scores to plunge as they rely on the tech “to think,” according to a new survey. Meanwhile, Google - with the best intentions - is pushing to increase the use of its Gemini AI on school-issued Chromebook computers - which have become nearly universal in American classrooms.
A total of 70% of teens ages 13 to 17 said they use AI for homework and assignments in class - with 63% admitting they take the shortcut simply “to get answers,” according to a survey by Common Sense Media’s Youth AI Safety Institute. Far fewer students, just 35%, said they use AI to “fix or improve” an answer they already know, according to the report.
It's a shame, if you think about it. The single most important thing a kid can get out of good schooling is an intuitive, inquiring mind. When you remove the wonder with easy answers, everybody loses. Juss' sayin'...

"intuitive, inquiring mind'?
ReplyDeletePublic education has been fighting that for YEARS.
AI is great as a research assistant for broad searches but do your own research first and then see if it exposes any gaps. Do not surrender the responsibility for what you present as yours.
ReplyDeleteCommon Core: devised by Obama and planned in Dubi: main purpose to destroy the future of American children & so far a couple of generations cannot read, write and do math. Now we have AI, what a concept. Give the worlds knowledge into a machine & destroy the very books that held that knowledge, so what do you get a machine that self expands in knowledge and changes the very knowledge that was inputted into the machine. Anyone remember the move "The Forbin Project", it's on Amazon to watch for $3.99. Suggest you watch it as it may be truth telling to a super AI machine.
ReplyDeleteOne of my grandsons just got an academic letter for maintaining a 90+ average. I got one back in the 50's, now I wonder if it's genes or AI.
