I attended an all boys Catholic High School run by Irish Christian Brothers in Newark, NJ. Essex Catholic HS was in an old insurance company building and - at the time I was there, 67 through 71, we averaged somewhere in the area of 3,000 total students from all over the area. Suffice to say we were powewrhouses in every team sport.
We thankfully had two sister schools - East Orange Catholic and Our Lady of Good Council HS - both of which were girls-only.. I say thankfully 'cause our monthly dances would have been a bit awkward without those two schools. And, yes, we were required under penalty of death to wear Jacket and tie to the dances. Even in Senior Year (1971).
Thankfully for future generations of kids up there, neither of the two
Catholics school still exist. Strange days, indeed...

I graduated from El Cajon, So. Cal., (El Kahone) High in '69. Every Saturday night, the police sponsored a dance. It was so well attended, no one could see what was going on in the middle of the dance floor. School had strict, old school dress standards. In '70, you could have long hair, girls could wear pants and shorts. I didn't care, I was at my 1st duty station, McConnell AFB, Wichita, Kansas.
