This vintage (colorized by me) photograph shows four women from the USO roller-skating through Midtown Manhattan in New York City during World War II to promote gas rationing and energy.
The original caption by the Associated Press read: Four "Roller Vanities" of the Broadway show skate up New York's Fifth Avenue as they campaigned to save gas, June 2, 1942. From left to right: Ronnie Billet, Dolly Durkin, Isabel Newland and Jo Reilly.
The Roller Vanities opened in Madison Square Garden on June 3 and were there for 4 nights.
From a contemporary newspaper blurb about Roller Vanities: One hundred roller skaters provide speed, spectacle and rhythm, moving on 800 ball-bearing wheels. The "Rollerettes," a 24-girl troupe, will dance on roller skates. There will be a ballet of ostrich plume fans, and the climax will be 70 skaters in a military number.
