The story of Iron Eyes Cody begins with his birth as Espera Oscar de Corti in 1904 to Sicilian immigrant parents in Louisiana. After his parents separated, he moved west to Texas and later California, where he and his brothers sought work as background extras in the booming Hollywood film industry. Adopting the stage name Iron Eyes Cody, he began playing Native American characters almost exclusively. Over a career spanning six decades, he appeared in over 200 films and television shows, frequently starring alongside Western icons like Roy Rogers and John Wayne, becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces for Indigenous roles.
Cody reached peak cultural significance in 1971 when he starred in the famous "Crying Indian" anti-litter public service announcement for Keep America Beautiful. The commercial featured him paddling a canoe through polluted waters and shedding a single tear as a bag of garbage landed at his feet, transforming him into an international symbol of environmental stewardship. Fully embracing his public persona, Cody lived his everyday life off-screen in traditional Native attire, wearing braided wigs, fringed leathers, and beaded moccasins wherever he went.
In 1996, a journalistic investigation exposed official census records and baptismal documents proving that Cody had no Indigenous ancestry and was entirely of Sicilian descent. Despite public confirmation from his own family members, Cody fiercely denied the findings until his death in 1999 at age 94, maintaining that his father was Cherokee and his mother Cree. Whether driven by deep conviction or a commitment to his self-created Hollywood image, Cody spent his entire adult life fully immersed in the identity he constructed.
