This was the projected path of Hurricane Irma the day before it struck my old home island of St. John,, It struck St. John on September 6, 2017, with sustained winds around 150 mph and much higher gusts.
Approximately 90% of the structures on the island were damaged or destroyed.
The incredible sustained winds stripped every leaf from the island's trees, leaving hillsides looking charred and barren. Critical buildings, including the U.S. Customs Office in Cruz Bay, were completely lost, and power and communications were entirely cut off.
Of all of my friends still on island at that time - and I could say dozens and dozens - no one was spared. Every one of my friends houses were not just damaged - they were completely destroyed. A tragedy of frightening proportions. It was followed immediately - 10 days after - by another devastating hurricane, Maria, that finished destroying everything that remained...
