Homeowners who fall behind on property tax payments could be allowed to stay in their homes rather than face a forced sale, but only if they meet a strict age requirement. The proposed protection would apply to people aged 65 and older who can prove they are struggling financially.
The measure has been introduced in Pennsylvania, where lawmakers are considering new safeguards for seniors at risk of losing their primary residence over unpaid real estate taxes. House Bill 2732 would stop a county tax claim bureau from selling an eligible homeowner’s property while the protection remains in place.
It may be always sunny in Philadelphia , but the measure would not simply wipe away the overdue bill. Unpaid taxes would remain attached to the property, while interest, penalties, and other costs could continue to build. So, stop paying your taxes when you turn 75 and let the kids and grandkids pick up the tab when you kick. Smart money says yes - absolutely...

Property taxes are theft and a government scam.. Tax on something that was initially taxed at the sale. Tax on something you supposedly own. Tax increases on value the state decides even though you didn't sell the house. It is the governments in perpetuity.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying the sheer number of taxes in the is country isn't crazy but I will say this - how would city roads, water lines, sewer, police, fire fighters, etc get built and maintained without some kind of property tax? You are getting and using these services, are you not? Maybe a more equitable method of this kind of tax is only having to pay on the cost basis of a home? That and put severe limits on millage rates as well as that is the other side of the (tax) coin.
