New Orleans is preparing to let artificial intelligence help answer certain 911 calls, raising new questions about whether computers should play a role when Americans need emergency assistance. Officials say the system will not replace human dispatchers or handle serious crimes, shootings, medical emergencies, or other life-threatening situations. Instead, it is designed to manage repeat calls about incidents that emergency officials already know about.
The AI system can identify when a caller is near a reported traffic accident and ask whether the person is calling about that same crash. If the caller only wants information or is confirming that the accident has already been reported, the system may provide an update and free a human dispatcher for a more urgent call. If the caller is involved in the crash, has new information, is confused, or needs additional help, the call will be transferred to a live operator.
Officials say the goal is to reduce overwhelming call surges and help human dispatchers focus on emergencies where every second matters. New Orleans handles a large volume of emergency calls, and staffing shortages have made it harder for call centers to keep up. Supporters say using AI for repetitive calls could reduce wait times and put trained professionals back on the most serious emergency lines.
