Fictional serial killers (like Hannibal Lecter or Dexter) are often portrayed as hyper-intelligent masterminds who stay steps ahead of the law. In contrast, criminological studies show that real-world serial killers typically possess average or below-average intelligence, and their eventual capture is usually the result of sloppy mistakes rather than a brilliant cat-and-mouse game.
The average IQ of a serial killer is approximately 94.7, which falls squarely into the average range (90 to 110) for the general population. While media tropes often depict them as super-intelligent masterminds, data shows they match societal norms rather than elevated genius. Making the villain a genius raises the stakes and creates a more intellectually stimulating puzzle for the protagonist and the audience to solve.
There are exceptions, however. For instance, Ted Kaczynski had an IQ of 167.

That is the average IQ of the "serial killers" that have been CAUGHT. NOBODY knows how many are out there that have not and may never be caught. And THEIR IQ is quite possibly much higher. But then again...the IQ of the average cop isn't all that high either. In fact it's the ONLY "profession" where the courts have ruled that the people hiring cops can refuse to hire someone to be a cop because they have TOO HIGH AN IQ.

They only tested the IQ of serial killers who were dumb enough to be caught - just sayin' !
