President Harry S. Truman happily displays a copy of the Chicago Daily Tribune with its famous erroneous headline, "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN," following his historic upset victory in the 1948 presidential election.
Due to an early morning print deadline and a labor strike, the Tribune relied on early projections and went to press before complete election tallies proved the polls wrong.
Incumbent Democrat Harry S. Truman defeated Republican challenger Thomas E. Dewey, securing one of the greatest and most surprising comebacks in American political history.
Photographed at St. Louis Union Station on November 4, 1948, a beaming Truman holding the mistaken paper created one of the most iconic and enduring images in journalism.
That was 78 years ago, and the sentiment remains the same.

Truman 1948 Platform:
Delete-Civil Rights: Pushed for federal anti-lynching laws, abolition of the poll tax, a permanent Fair Employment Practice Committee (FEPC), and an end to racial segregation in the military.
-Labor and Economy: Vowed to repeal the restrictive Taft-Hartley Act, raise the minimum wage, expand Social Security, and institute federal aid to education and public housing.
-Agriculture & Health: Promoted federal price supports for farmers and a national health insurance program.
-Foreign Policy: Advocated for collective security, containment of Soviet communism, economic recovery in Europe via the Marshall Plan, and support for the newly established state of Israel.
Truman would not be welcome in the Republican party today
Truman was a democrat. you do realize that don't you? He was FDR's vice-prisident.
