I can't believe I actually agree with AOC. Well, not on everything, but...

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is partnering with Democratic lawmakers to introduce the High Court Gift Ban Act, which seeks to restrict Supreme Court justices from accepting gifts valued over $50, thus aligning their ethical standards with those of Congress and other federal officials. This renewed effort addresses concerns over ethical practices at the Supreme Court, particularly regarding the influence of wealthy benefactors on judicial decisions. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized the aim of the legislation is to eliminate "dark money" from the highest judicial body in the U.S. and 'restore public trust in the legal system'.
The proposed law would impose strict limits on gifts, specifically prohibiting justices from receiving any single gift over $50 and capping total annual gifts from the same source at $100. It also seeks to regulate hospitality that includes excessive luxury travel, a notable gap in current regulations.

Supporters of the ban (including me, unbelievably) argue it is essential for 'maintaining the integrity of the judiciary', especially in light of reports detailing expansive gifts received by justices, including Justice Clarence Thomas, who is reported to have accepted over $4.2 million in benefits.
