File this under 'How to buy votes 101'. A new push to raise the minimum wage to $25 an hour for all workers, with no exceptions, has the support of New Jersey Democrats. The Living Wage for All Act is the first major piece of federal legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Analilia Mejia, D-N.J., 11th District (PS - she's a died-in-the-wool Commie Socialist).
"This bill would transform millions of lives, ensuring working people earn a true living wage instead of being forced to choose between putting food on the table and taking care of their health. Americans deserve an economy that works for all, not just the billionaire class," Mejia said.
Mejia recently won an April 16 special election to fill the seat previously held by fellow Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill. U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., 12th District, also showed her support for the bill in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.
A worker who makes $25 an hour and works 40 hours a week (almost none of whom will work a full 40) will make $52,000 before taxes. The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 since 2009, though many states have their own wage floors. In New Jersey, the minimum wage is 15.92 per hour.
The increase would affect about 350,000 of New Jersey’s roughly 1.9 million hourly workers. Right off the top of my head I'd say that all but guarantees that many Democrat voters. Hmmmm...

Buying votes is illegal, but promising to get rich isn't!
ReplyDelete"This bill would transform millions of lives"
ReplyDeleteStarting with the hundreds of thousands who will lose their jobs because the new minimum wage is more than the work they do is worth. And don't forget their families and the businesses that rely on their patronage.
"Yeah, I know California tried this and it's failing. But they didn't have us in charge."
ReplyDeleteIn my county a living wage is $25 an hour, more than $50k a year for a single person. Only a few jobs in the county come close to that level.
DeleteIf socialists understood economics, they wouldn’t be socialists. Theres a hard lesson coming if those idiots pass this into law.
ReplyDeleteEvery increase in the minimum wage knocks the bottom rung off the ladder of success. Those without skills MUST have an opportunity to trade their labor for skills acquisition at whatever wage their EMPLOYER feels is appropriate, NOT THE WORTHLESS GOVERNMENT. An employer can ONLY pay someone as much or less than the VALUE they deliver or the business will fail. If the ONLY REASON you receive a wage increase is because the government FORCES your employer to pay you more, you probably should have been fired long ago.
ReplyDelete"Every increase in the minimum wage knocks the bottom rung off the ladder of success." Well said. Who's on the bottom rung, those on Soc Sec whose COLAs never come close to real inflation. 3% when inflation is 22%! Someone should lose their job.
Delete"Someone should lose their job", I'm think that what happened was their job.
Deletea living wage in nj is impossible since the people who made it unlivable are still in power.
ReplyDeleteWhat's a burger going to cost if the person flipping the burgers is making $25 an hour? (Don't forget that the employer is also paying an additional 7.5% of that in SS taxes).
ReplyDeleteThere is a point where I'm not willing to spend that kind of money for fast food.
This insanity de-values all other jobs. Skilled workers will expect more as the snowball grows larger.
