Around 80 hippos smuggled into Colombia by drug baron Pablo Escobar will be executed after the out-of-control herd started to run riot. The beasts were first smuggled to the South American nation in the 80s before escaping the cartel kingpin‘s compound when he died in a police shootout in 1993.
The hippos have been causing havoc - and even attacking villagers - in Colombia ever since. Now, authorities plan to slaughter at least 80 of them as part of the latest plan to control the growing population. Environment Minister Irene Velez said killing some of the hippos - which are considered an invasive species in Colombia - was the “responsible and ethical” thing to do.
