It's National 'Spit in the ocean day', but my wife has another name for it...

The same Government that can't pass a balanced budget - the last one that actually did it was during Calvin Coolidge's administration - insists that you file your tax by the end of the day today, or there'll be hell to pay, sorta.
Anyway, they do absolutely bupkis to pay down the national debt (now estimated to be in excess of $ 325,000.00 per person in this country) and they spend more then they take in, so the cycle rolls on and on and on. Why is it that they can get away with this seemingly forever, but if we tried it ourselves we'd be out of business in no time?
Oh - my wife's other - actually better - way of discussing acts of futility? 'Pissing in the ocean and hoping the fish willl feel it'. Juss' sayin'...

Half a century later and it still rings true...

"But I saw it on the internet, so it must be true, right?"
They even made memes about it, so it must be true, right?

"The Dark Side of the Moon," the 1973 album by Pink Floyd, varies in length depending on the source and format (LP, CD, digital, etc.) of the album, but all range from 42:49 to 42:56. On Spotify, it clocks in at 42:52. They're close enough to 42:50 that the post's claim about the album's runtime is essentially accurate.
However, the running time of the album doesn't match up with NASA's official numbers for the Artemis II mission. Lauren Low, a public affairs specialist at the space agency, said in an April 14, 2026, email that there are a couple of ways to count the time when the Orion capsule was on the dark side of the Moon. Neither one of them matches the length of the album: The loss of signal lasted 40 minutes. The actual transit around the far side was close to 50 minutes.

Up to 70,000 British women left Great Britain from 1945-1947 to reunite with their American husbands in the United States. This is a photo of the HMS Victorious filled with women and children on their way to the US.
After I saw this I got to thinking about the neighborhood I grew up in and realized I had at least two friends that had English Moms and another two who had French mothers.

That Coachella music festival thing was so poorly run, this is a perfect example. These jackasses are standing in a 90-minute line to buy a $ 15.00 cup of coffee. This country is doomed if these are the folks that're gonna be running it any time soon...

Probably worth about $ 600k these days.

Republican Iowa Senator Joni Ernst recently alleged that Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar attempted to secure an earmark exceeding $1 million for a questionable “substance abuse clinic” located within a Somali-owned restaurant. During a January 8 interview on “Varney and Company,” which resurfaced on social media, Ernst pointed out numerous red flags regarding the clinic’s legitimacy and connected it to previous fraud cases involving Somali daycares in Minnesota. She described the earmark request as being from “members of Congress,” implying a trend of misuse of public funds.
·Ernst explained that the earmark was intended for a so-called substance abuse clinic but was associated with IRS documentation that listed three individuals sharing a residential address. Following her concerns, the earmark was withdrawn from the spending bill, highlighting a concerning pattern of financial irregularities “flowing to bad actors in Minnesota,” according to Ernst.

It took me a solid two minutes to get this.
Am I just getting dim or is this overly obtuse?

  1. As a farmer, my income taxes are due on March 1. And then we come to property taxes which are not based on the productivity of our land but on what some lawyer or investor is willing to pay for land.

  2. Until I was 13 I grew up in a neighborhood that we needed to speak 7 different languages to ask for a cookie. Many were retired military, Signal School instructors, or Army officers. Italian, German, French, Belgium, Taiwanese, Korean, and Australian wives and mothers to my friends.

  3. Is demand for school services unlimited? What about demand for firefighting services? Is that demand unlimited?

Seems to me like we somehow manage to keep demand for first grade seats in line with the 6 year old population in the country. The same can be said for firefighters. The fact that we offer free of charge firefighting service has somehow not triggered unlimited demand.
I think that somehow demand for cancer services would match the number of people with cancer and not become infinite.

190+ countries in the world and we are the only ones that do it this way and our outcomes are nowhere near in line with our expenditures.

  4. Joe, you married an eloquent woman.
I visualize her as someone like Henry Hill's wife in "Goodfellas'.

    1. One of my high school math teachers was a war bride from Germany. Back in those days aircraft plants regularly broke the sound barrier during test flights. One did once and she dove under her desk. The laughter of the kids died out pretty quickly as she got back up with tears running down her terrified face.

  9. Many years ago a Catholic school principal thought his wide leather belt would beat some obedience into a tough new kid. Fortunately the local oral surgeon gives clergy a discount on reconstructive work. Yes the tough guy went to juvie but the belt got retired.
