Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian tore into Congress for forcing airport security agents to work without pay, calling the situation “inexcusable” and accusing lawmakers of using frontline workers as “political chips” while a partial government shutdown drags into its fifth week.
“It’s inexcusable that our security agents, our frontline agents, that are essential to what we do, are not being paid, and it’s ridiculous to see them being used as political chips,” Bastian told CNBC on Tuesday. “We’re outraged.”

At the beginning of the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq sent 142 military and civilian aircraft to Iran for protection from coalition airstrikes. What was meant to be temporary safekeeping soon became permanent possession.
Tehran later claimed the planes as part of the war reparations it believed Baghdad owed for the eight-year Iran–Iraq War, denying any binding agreement to return them. Most of the aircraft were left unused on airfields, deteriorating under harsh conditions, and were never returned to Iraq.
Decades later, some of these aircraft are now actively serving in the ongoing 2026 conflict. During this war, two Su-24s were shot down by Qatar, along with several civilian planes being destroyed.
