I'm glad to see it's not just me. Happy Hour, anyone?

I have had exactly one full meal in a restaurant in the last three or four years, and that was this past Thanksgiving, because A; I didn't wanna cook, and B: We got asked by friends to join them, and C: No, I did not order turkey. I actually had the best Osso Bucco I may have ever tasted. The Babs and I eat out maybe three or four times a month, most often sitting at the bar and sharing a sandwich or burger, or just ordering appies. It's not that we're cheap - by no means. It's just that we're really not big eaters, per se, any maybe that's why I don't look  like my brother.

According to this report, this appears to be the 'new norm'. Supposedly, nationwide appie sales are up 20+% because of this. Who can blame 'em when a rather smallish steak in a chain restaurant will gitcha for $ 23.00 or more.
What do you guys do?

  1. Since the days of eating a family sized pizza and having a pitcher of beer are over,I either get an appetizer or order for the meal today and tomorrow. The biggo bone in Ribeye from Road House with a baked potato sends me home full on tater and just enough of the steak to make sure it's good ,then I'm set up for at least one more day. The kitchen is not complicated now since I'm the only one here. I can't even get around a regular sized burger anymore. Those leftovers go out on the deck for whatever gets here first. I've got a coupla O'possums and a feral cat that visit in the night. Hopefully, since I'm not drinking anymore, the weight will start to drop.

  2. Those "appies" can be enough for one person's full meal, e.g., the New Ultimate Trio. That's a meal being sold as an appetizer.

  3. All we have up here is junk chain fast food joints where you can sit in the drive thru lane for half an hour, really bad mexican, thai or chinese places, or REALLY overpriced diner type places. Couple of the dive bars do burn-your-own burgers for more than I'm willing to pay to do my own cooking. Bad cardboard takeout or delivery pizza will run ya fifty bucks and an hour's wait. I just stay home.

  4. I ran into a food allergy that has pretty much stopped me from eating any fast food. If I put down anything with soy in it , it's going to be ugly for me the next couple of days ,and that crap is in almost everything. Oddly I have pretty good luck at mom & pop Mexican places which is fine with me . I miss eating anything and everything, and I really miss hitting the Chinese buffet It took me a long time to figure out the issue , but now that I found the culprit at least I know what to avoid. It kinda makes me wonder how many poor people have a low key food allergy that makes them miserable for no apparent reason. Good luck out there !
