The lights are off - and nobody's home...

According to Realtor.com, there are 14.9 million vacant homes nationwide, according to a new LendingTree study that identifies the highest vacancy rates. The number of vacancies, or vacant homes, varies depending on the part of the country and the population. Two out of the top three leading the list of vacant-home states can be found in New England.
Maine has the highest vacancies, at 157,467 vacant homes, followed by Vermont (67,606) and Alaska (59,745), according to LendingTree. LendingTree researchers looked at the U.S. Census Bureau 2023 American Community Survey with five-year estimates and measured the overall vacancy rate in a state by dividing the number of vacant households by the total number of households.

It identified 'occupied households' that included homes owned and rented by occupants who use the home as a primary residence. 'Vacant households' were broken down into several categories: "for rent," "rented, not occupied," "for sale only," "sold, not occupied," "for seasonal, recreational, or occasional use," "for migrant workers," and "other vacant."

  1. A low life at work kept getting caught cheating on his (2nd) wife. Knowing he was facing a divorce he and his mistress disabled all of his rentals by taking out the bathroom fixtures. When he went to court he got away with declaring his rentals as money losers. The court fell for it. After divorce was finalized he married his mistress, the bathrooms were made usable, and his rentals went back on the market. Before long he was caught cheating on the upgrade wife too. He again disabled the bathrooms. Upgraded wife had seen this before. Upgrade wife just told prior wife how they cheated her. Stay tuned.

  2. I am watching a property that is a 27 year old property that has been vacant the past two and a half years. The property taxes have not been paid the past two years. If they are not paid this year it goes on the courthouse steps on auction. The wife has a friend in the tax office that is watching for us. The HVAC is less than 10 years old and the roof looks good. A yard cleanup, pressure wash the siding, and gut the insides, new floor, paint, maybe appliances, hot water heater, and fridge to rent it out to take advantage of it being in a college town.
