How affordable is it where you live?

The map uses a scale from 0 to 2, with all states scoring below 1. Lower scores indicate less affordable housing, while higher scores mean more affordable housing. The affordability score is calculated based on the affordability of for-sale listings across income levels, along with median sale prices relative to median household incomes.
The median home sale price in Iowa was roughly 30% lower than the national average in 2024. Montana is identified as the least affordable state with a score of 0.40.  Iowa is the most affordable state, scoring 0.92, with a median home sale price about 30% lower than the national average in 2024. West Virginia is also among the most affordable states with a score of 0.91. Ohio is another affordable state with a score of 0.89. Indiana has an affordability score of 0.87.

States like California and Hawaii are among the least affordable. Florida has a score of 0.52, indicating relatively lower affordability, and with the housing market in South Florida cratering, this num ber could go considerably lower as price wars (downward) are kicking in.
States in the Midwest and South generally have better housing affordability.
States on the West Coast and in the Northeast tend to be less affordable.

  1. Montana's affordability is probably skewed based on low population and high number of out of state owners. At one point Hollywood was buying up houses and ranches for use as a bug out destination.

    1. This^^^^ Ted Turner started this a long time ago. I think the Wahlberg's are the latest. The dream of owning a ranch for the avg Joe is dead.
