ReplyDeleteAm I the only one that noticed; the bridge clearance was 135 feet and the masts were 147 feet.....so how did it get into the harbor in the first place?
ReplyDeleteSteve, the ship was moored just downstream of the bridge (NOT in the harbor), they were well aware that it would not fit under the bridge. Unfortunately, once they got underway the motive power (the engine) failed, and since they did not tie up to a tug the wind and current pushed them into the bridge. I have no idea why they did not take advantage of the tug, it was *right there* - perhaps it was pride on the part of the Harbor Pilot. Dumbass. Even *I* know that wooden ships are lightweight and easily affected by wind and currents... and I'm a rocket guy...
DeleteAs for the tropical scene, it reminds me of the beaches at Diego Garcia - which were beautiful and uncrowded (obviously).
