A massive Mexican navy tall ship on a goodwill visit to New York slammed into the Brooklyn Bridge late Saturday — toppling its huge masts in a horrifying scene that left two dead and 17 injured, including two critically. The majestic Cuauhtémoc - which has a crew of 277, mostly cadets - apparently lost power as it was sailing out of New York on its way to Iceland and the current carried it into the road deck of the bridge around 8:30 p.m., according to Mayor Eric Adams and footage of the crash.
The collision sheared off the ship’s 147-foot masts – with alarming footage capturing numerous crew members dangling for their lives from the sails and booms after the boat hit the bridge, which has a max clearance of 135 feet.
I hope I'm not sounding too naive when I ask WTF do they need a navy for? Some stuff just doesn't make sense to me. Headline photo links to original story.

COOPERSTOWN, NY — In a shocking new report, a team of amateur ghost hunters working near the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum caught the ghost of Pete Rose placing bets on his Hall of Fame induction.
The ghost hunters made use of a specialized EVP recorder, which they say picked up a recording of Rose's spectral form placing the bet with a ghost bookie. "I....[unintelligible]....need the money," the spirit appeared to say on the recording.
The ghost of Pete Rose reportedly placed bets on when he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame, as well as what notable public figures might be in attendance at such an event. ReplyDeleteMaybe having a tugboat on station near major bridges to intercept out of control ships would be a reasonable expense. This is the second bridge in just a few years,, the cost of cleanup, rebuilding, loss of business, disruption of shipping,,, the cost of a tugboat being On Station, by the bridge, that cost,call it insurance, it would be nothing compared to the costs of the accidents.
