How they usta do Daytona...

This is an aerial view of the old beach race course at Daytona Beach, FL They raced on the beach and made a turn onto Highway A1A for 2 miles, and then back onto the beach. The final race was in 1958 an won by Paul Goldsmith who also started on the pole with a speed of 140.57.

  1. My dad sold most of the equipment that was use to build the new Daytona track. He and "Fireball" Roberts were the first people to ride around the track when the final coating of asphalt was dry. Bill France owner of the track tried to get dad to come work for him. He declined unfortunately. No telling what my life would have been like. If he had accepted.

  2. My father raced a bike in the Daytona 200 on that beach. He was way out in front when his transmission blew up because the mechanic put the wrong oil in it.
