There's a major difference between owing some guy five bucks and owing some guy a million. I'm technically in debt constantly since I put everything on the credit card and pay it off at the end of the month. The US economy is roughly $25T. The debt is close to $33T. Interest on the debt is close to $1T and interest rates are still relatively low. Since no one is looking at eliminating the deficit, we can expect to have the debt reach $50T in short order and 33% of the federal budget will have to go to servicing the debt. If interest rates rise due to inflation, expect 50% of the federal budget to go to servicing the debt.
