Food has an environmental impact. Wait, what?

There they go with that cow fart nonsense again...

  1. Beef is best for supporting plant life. No food without CO2.

  2. Any time some idiot brings up cow farts, I ask if they think it was a good idea then for the Buffalo hunters wiped out the American Bison. If they don't think it's a good idea, they're a hypocrite. If they do think it's a good idea, they hate the native Americans.

  3. I'm always skeptical of these deals denigrating beef as environmentally disastrous. Cattle, and beef cattle in particular, mostly consume plant materials that are indigestible to monogastric animals (humans, swine). And even cattle destined for 2-3 months in a feedlot at the end of their lives spend the bulk of their lives eating grass and forbs. Breaking down of those otherwise indigestible plant materials by the rumen microherd is going to release more 'greenhouse gases', like methane... but grazing cattle on lands not suitable for crop production is integral to producing a nutrient-dense, high quality foodstuff from indigestible (for us) plant materials that would ultimately release similar or greater amounts of 'greenhouse gases' as they decompose naturally.
