But who'll be watching the watchers?
Tech executives have pressed lawmakers to keep regulation light on artificial intelligence, claiming internal guidelines will suffice. Recent proposals in Congress have stalled amid lobbying from major firms, leaving oversight largely in private hands. The stakes are high because AI systems now influence everything from hiring to national security. What could possibly go wrong?
Broader debate centers on whether companies that profit from rapid deployment can also police misuse. Past episodes with social media showed self-policing often lagged behind public harm. Lawmakers remain divided on new enforcement agencies or liability rules that would apply to AI developers.
The cartoon argues that handing AI oversight to the same firms building ever more powerful models repeats a familiar error. Light-touch promises sound reassuring yet leave society exposed to serious unintended consequences. Stronger public standards are needed before capabilities outrun accountability.
They sure as fuck know already that AI can't control itself...
Does the shit makes a sound before it hits the fan? Listen closely...
Ilhan Omar’s staff helped get her birthdate changed in public records once the Minnesota Democrat was elected to Congress in 2018, a switch that has since spurred frenzied accusations that she misrepresented her age to secure US citizenship.
The alteration could offer a big clue as to what federal immigration agents were searching for when they raided her DC home Monday: If the congresswoman is actually one year older than she’s claimed to be, that would mean she couldn’t have legally become a US citizen in 2000, critics contend.
Omar’s birthdate had been listed in the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library as Oct. 4, 1981, as well as on reference sites such as Wikipedia and in media outlets like the BBC, for the entire time she served in the state House and for several months into her congressional term.

Try not to be so literal next time...
A New York City Carvel took a customer’s request for a customized birthday message too literally, leading to a “hilarious” verbatim inscription atop the ice cream cake. The hysterical message came about after casting agent Chelsi Kern ordered a classic Fudgie the Whale cake, she said in an Oct. 3 Threads post. Kern had asked that the cake, a childhood favorite of husband Matthew Bennett’s, cheekily read “RUN” in celebration for his birthday.
A receipt Kern posted showed instructions for the message, requesting that “RUN” be written “(BIG, all caps, creepy if possible).” However, instead of receiving a big, creepy inscription of “RUN” on top of the chocolate whale, the cake decorator took the instructions much more literally.
That's what happens when you hire people who don't speak English, I guess. Carvel did not respond to a request for comment...
Look it up and find out...

It's just heavy metal. Leave your politics at the door...
Metallica frontman James Hetfield delivered a message - that I and certainly most of Americans appreciate - when people pay to see a rock concert, maybe politics should be left at the door.
During Metallica’s most recent concert, Hetfield addressed the crowd and made it clear he wasn’t interested in turning the band’s stage into a political rally. Instead, he said Metallica’s purpose is bringing people together through music. “We don’t give a crap about the differences, OK?” Hetfield told the audience. “We care about the similarities. And we all love music.” Hetfield then made his point even clearer: “Music is our common language. Politics has no place here.”
The comments stand out at a time when 'entertainers' increasingly use concerts, award shows and other public appearances to promote political causes or attack politicians. Hetfield’s message was different - regardless of what fans believe politically, they’re at the concert because they share a love for Metallica and heavy metal.
For one night, the message was refreshingly simple: Republican, Democrat, conservative, liberal or none of the above - enjoy the music and leave the political fighting somewhere else.

Sometimes, ya just wanna hear something about the people around you.
And sometimes you have to look back in time
to see a timeless gesture between friends...
Back in 1952, in the Ford River Rouge Plant in Detroit,
every man worked the assembly line. Same shift, same lunch whistle. Joe Kowalski, 42, a Polish-American line worker, had a ritual. Every day at noon, he opened his dented metal lunchbox and took a photo out. A photo of his son, Michael, who was fighting in Korea. He would look at it, kiss it, and put it back. One day, his son's photo went missing from the lunchbox. He thought he lost it. He didn't eat for 3 days.
The 60 men on his line heard about it. They each brought a photo of their own sons, brothers, fathers in the war, and taped them inside his lunchbox lid. 60 photos.
Inside the lid they wrote: "We all wait with you, Joe."
Two weeks later, Joe got a telegram. Michael was alive and coming home. The whole line stopped working for 5 minutes and cheered. That lunchbox is now in the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit.

How it went down. Sorta...
Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home was searched Monday by Homeland Security Investigations agents executing a warrant secured through the Justice Department. The department said the action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.
Sources said the investigation concerns immigration paperwork from Omar’s childhood that was completed by her late father. Homeland Security Investigations is ICE’s criminal-investigations arm and has authority over potential immigration-document, identity, and benefit-fraud cases; it is distinct from ICE’s deportation-focused operations.
Omar’s office said she has “done nothing wrong,” calling the search an abuse of power and an attempt to weaponize federal law enforcement against a political opponent. Omar said she was safe and would not be silenced, describing the action as the latest escalation in what she characterized as years of political attacks against her.
The search follows comments last month from border czar Tom Homan, who said there was an ongoing criminal investigation involving Omar. At that time, Omar said she had not been contacted in connection with any investigation. No criminal charges against Omar were announced in the CBS report.

These adornments are all one piece and all hand-carved. The each sit between the booths (what they call 'snugs') at the Crown Liquor Saloon in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which is famous for its ornate Victorian motif and mahogany woodwork.
When craftsmen are allowed to do what they so best, you get spectacular little details like this. As the famous architect Meis van der Rohe once said: God is in the details.

Lawmakers from both parties have accused Omar of inserting herself into sensitive DHS matters, including refugee policy and constituent cases that cross into agency jurisdiction. Critics argue these interventions risk politicizing security functions, while supporters view them as legitimate constituent service. The probe arrives amid heightened partisan divides over immigration and agency accountability.

Babs was looking up something about Crones disease (a friend has it) and she came across this article from the medical school at UCLA. Take a look at the words and phrases that I highlighted. Now, tell me - do you want a doctor who thinks that verbage is appropriate to appraise your health condition - to give you your annual physical and provide advice for your well-being?
Or would ya just slap him or her really fuckin' hard if they started spouting shit like that while examining you? This is NOT a rhetorical question. I really do believe there's something in the air pollution out in LaLaLand that makes 'em that fuckin' retodded (said with my best Boston accent). Juss' sayin'...

Would that I could...
There are a lot of things I can do, not the least of which is building houses. I can do the whole thing myself, from digging the foundation to putting the ridge cap on the roof and everything in between. All the carpentry, plumbing, electrical, tile workl, everything. Been there done that.
The one thing I cannot do is dance. I may be the least coordinated person on the planet. It's not that I have two left feet. I have one of each like yer suppsoed to, it's just that they're permanently encased in concrete jack boots. I couldn't be less light on my feet if I weighed 400 pounds. Is what it is. I live with it. Hey - maybe God made me so fuckin' handsome to make up for my inability to dance the simplest dance...
