Playing it safe will get you a shot at birdie most of the time...

Playing it safe in golf rarely guarantees a birdie, but it dramatically lowers your risk of carding a bogey or worse.
• Avoid the "Hero Shot": Trying low-percentage shots - like threading a tiny gap through trees or carrying deep water when it is outside your reliable range - usually leads to high numbers.
• The 7/10 Rule: Before attempting a risky shot, ask yourself: "If I had 10 goes at this shot, could I pull it off at least 7 times?" If the answer is no, take your medicine, play to the center of the green or back to the fairway, and eliminate the big numbers.
• Killing Doubles Beats Chasing Birdies: For most amateur and mid-to-high handicappers, overall scores drop significantly not by making more birdies, but by completely eliminating doubles and triples.
The best round of golf I ever played was walking with a hand cart with no one in front or behind us on an early spring Thursday afternoon. I hit virtually every fairway with only a five-wood, played in record-fast time - 1 hour and 55 minutes  on a 7,000 yard course, and went birdie/birdie on the last two holes to card a 78. Only time in my life I ever broke 80.
