Rioters in France burned down a historic 19th-century landmark as almost 1,800 were arrested on Saturday following one of the country’s worst days of violence and looting in years, and French politicians don't have fuckin' clue how to shut it down - or why people are rioting in the first place.
Limoges City Hall in southwestern France went up in flames during a nationwide orgy of destruction, with the city’s furious mayor comparing the arson attack to the 2019 fire that destroyed Paris’s Notre Dame Cathedral.
“There was a clear, premeditated intention to burn down the town hall, and the people inside feared for their lives,” Limoges mayor Guillaume Guerin told Reuters.
Stunned onlookers watched on Saturday night as flames tore through the building, sending the 140-foot-high belfry and clocktown plunging to the ground after hundreds of masked 'thugs' smashed windows and used a battering ram to break down the main door. In Paris, mobs smashed shop windows, threw rocks at cops and firefighters, and tagged buildings as violence that ostensibly began as student protests last month became an excuse for rioting and lawlessness.
Nearly 1,800 arrests were made nationwide on Saturday, including a record 855 in Paris, where one protester died after suffering a cardiac arrest during demonstrations.
