President Trump lives on the edge of the 'Fucked if he does and fucked if he doesn't scale. He complimented Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during a recent speech, calling her a “beautiful woman” with a “beautiful voice.” But Trump’s choice of words once again sent some on the political left into a meltdown, with critics accusing him of sexism and treating a female world leader differently because she’s a woman.
Trump was recounting a conversation with Sheinbaum about his decision to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” Referring to Sheinbaum as his friend, Trump said, “She’s got the most beautiful voice. Beautiful woman, actually,” before describing their disagreement over his controversial renaming of the gulf.
Trump has also repeatedly praised Sheinbaum’s intelligence and leadership.
And here’s what makes the controversy even more interesting: Sheinbaum isn’t exactly Trump’s ideological soulmate. She’s a left-wing president who has publicly disagreed with him on major issues, yet Trump has continued praising her personally while the two governments work through serious disagreements.
Maybe we’ve reached the point where even a man telling a woman she’s beautiful has to become a national controversy. What used to be considered a compliment is apparently enough to start another Trump outrage cycle.
