Birthday week happenings had me in Captiva for the night. Got up to you-know-what at just past 4:00am and happened to look out the slider as I came back to bed, and this is what I saw. It's been a very, VERY long time since I've seen the Milky Way this clear. I think the last time I saw it it was even clearer that this.
It was up at TJ's cottage in Donegal County ona very rare, clear moonless night. I wish we had cell-phone cameras back then. I mean, we did, but nothing like today, where the camera is the most important feature of the phone.
You know what I mean...

When I was a kid up until the early 70's I could see the Milky Way every clear moonless night. Then everyone had to get a night light or numerous night lights on their farms and even the small towns around lit up like a Christmas Tree. I have the only farm I know of that has no night light. I don't need one to find my way around since I've been here so long and the lights from the town 3 miles away and the small city 10 miles away give enough light to see everything but the Milky Way.
ReplyDeleteEven in most parts of the desert southwest it's hard to get away from the glow of a city a 100 miles away. I live in the mountains and city people come out here and put their lights on all night long. Go back to the city you scaredicats.
DeleteBest view of the night sky I've ever had was on a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon years ago. There was a full moon during the trip. It was bright enough for me to read by.
ReplyDeleteWolf Creek Pass in Colorado on a dark night and watch the sky change in slow motion. Still think of it 25 years later.
ReplyDeleteLast night in the gulag called commiefornia I stood out just before dark on a warm night looking at a 1/4 moon Seemed more like June than October.
