According to a report in Forbes Magazine, the first imports of 300,000 metric tons of tariff-free beef President Donald Trump says will be sold to U.S. consumers at a discounted rate are set to enter the country Tuesday amid consumer worries about food safety and concerns from American ranchers who say it’s more important than ever for shoppers to buy domestic meat products.
Trump last week announced a plan to bolster the American beef supply by waiving tariffs on 100,000 tons of beef per month for three months. The imported meat, which only applies to a certain type of beef that will be a component of ground meat, will then be sold at a 25% discount from the going import price, the White House claims, which has raised consumer anxieties about the meat amid a national spike in food safety issues.
American cattle produce very fatty meat and to make standard ground beef like 80/20 or 90/10, domestic processors have to mix fatty U.S. beef with very lean beef. Because domestic lean cattle are at record lows, processors are buying lean trimmings from overseas.
“Product of USA” or “Made in the USA” stickers mean the product comes exclusively from animals born, raised, slaughtered and processed in the United States. Other stickers to look out for will say “Born, Raised, and Harvested in the USA” or "American Grassfed Association (AGA) Certified."
If beef is imported or blended, the country of origin list will appear in small print near the nutrition label or ingredient list. Consumers can also check oval Department of Agriculture inspection stickers for an establishment number, which can be searched online to find the exact facility where the beef was processed.
Before covid I was buying shredded roast beef from Argentina in a 3 lb pouch for around $12 and it was excellent. Then covid hit and the price went to $27! Haven't seen it listed in months maybe over a year.
ReplyDeleteGet on Craigslist, fecesbook marketplace, or whatever else you do your thing in your area, and find a local cattle farmer that sells halves or wholes. BUY THE COW DIRECT, then you don't have to worry about any of this nonsense. I pay ~$2k for 200 lbs of meat: steaks ground, roasts, etc. Best shit I've ever eaten, I KNOW there's no crap in it, and the guy that grows it makes his profit he needs to make. He takes it to the butcher, pays all the fee's up-front (its built into the per-pound price I pay when I pickup)... I get a box of frozen stuff labeled in plastic freezer bags, vacuum packed direct from the butcher.

ReplyDeleteTrump imposed a 26.4% tariff on imported beef last year. The tariff was gas on the fire fueled by limited US beef supply. Any baboon with half a brain cell can understand that if you have limited domestic supply and you limit imported supply via tariffs the result will be higher prices for consumers.
Now Trump is saying that beef will be sold at 25% below CURRENT market value. In other words Trump is removing the the stupid tariff he placed on beef a few months ago.
This is Trump setting the house on fire and then asking for praise for bringing a bucket of water.
Tariffs are a TAX on consumers. No president in my lifetime has imposed more taxes on American consumers than Donald Trump
Back in the '50s Giant Orange stands were located all up and down route 99 in California. This was the main North/South route through the hot interior valley. Those big round balls of stucco were much appreciated!
