Waking up in a sink hole can't be fun...

A few years back, a Florida homeowner was asleep in his bedroom when the floor beneath him simply gave way without warning. A massive sinkhole opened directly under the house, and the ground swallowed the room entirely within seconds.
Emergency crews responded immediately, but the instability of the site made rescue efforts incredibly difficult and dangerous. The incident became one of the most widely reported sinkhole tragedies in Florida history, renewing conversations statewide about the unpredictable risks of building on the state's fragile limestone bedrock.
It's terrifying to think something like this can happen with almost zero warning at all. Would living in Florida - or anywhere else they appear - change the way you think about the ground beneath your home?
To be honest, I never gave it any thought. Up until now...

  1. There's a good indicator where sinkholes will form. Look for the lowest area, especially if it collects water. That's where a sinkhole will form.

On higher ground? Water drains quickly to lower areas? Probably not a sinkhole area.

There are also sinkhole detection and remediation companies.
