I'm a classic baby boomer, born in 1953. What events have I witnessed in my lifetime? Born way back when, I've witnessed (not all personally, but) a historic span of immense social, technological, and political transformation, from the Cold War dawn to the digital age.
In '53, the double-helix structure of DNA was discovered, and the first issue of Playboy was printed.
1954: The televised Army-McCarthy hearings played out on growing numbers of household television sets.
1955: Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat, sparking the Montgomery bus boycott.
1957: The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, kicking off the historic Space Race.
The 60's brought us: John F. Kennedy was elected U.S. President - the first catholic to ever hold that position, although, based on his reputation, not exactly a strident Catholic.
1961: The Berlin Wall went up, and Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space.
1962: The Cuban Missile Crisis brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.
1963: Martin Luther King Jr. led the March on Washington, and President Kennedy was assassinated. Beatlemania also swept the globe as the British Invasion began.
1968: Both Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, and massive anti-war and civil rights protests peaked globally.
1969: Apollo 11 landed the first humans on the moon, and the counterculture culminated at the Woodstock music festival.
In 1974, The Watergate scandal led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
In 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected.
In 1991, the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union dissolved, effectively ending the Cold War.
The 90's gave us the rise of the commercial internet and personal computers completely revolutionized modern work and communication.
Finally, I'm sure I missed a few high and low points, but it's still a lot. Hurray for me and anyone like me - we've navigated the post-9/11 security era, the advent of smartphones and social media, and a rapidly globalized 21st-century world. And then again, there was covid. Yikes...
