For my friends on the left who might be critical of renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, you're being hypocritical. Acting like this is some unprecedented outrage after a decade of the left renaming sports teams, schools, highways, food brands, and half the dictionary.
A quick reminder, in case anyone forgot:
• Washington Redskins → Commanders
• Cleveland Indians → Guardians
• Stanford Indians → Cardinal
• Edmonton Eskimos → Elks
• Loudoun County Raiders → Captains
Places and holidays
• Columbus Day → Indigenous Peoples’ Day
• Robert E. Lee High School → John Lewis High
• Jefferson Davis Highway → Richmond Highway
• Mount McKinley → Denali (later reversed)
• Fort Bragg → Fort Liberty (later reversed)
• Fort Hood → Fort Cavazos
Brands and institutions
• Boy Scouts of America → Scouting America
• Aunt Jemima → Pearl Milling Company
• Uncle Ben’s → Ben’s Original
• Eskimo Pie → Edy’s Pie
• Land O’Lakes → kept the land, dropped the Indian
Language
• Illegal alien → undocumented immigrant
• Hispanic → Latinx (a term Hispanics never asked for and don’t use)
• Mother → birthing person
• Breastfeeding → chestfeeding
• Inmate / prisoner / convict → justice-involved person
• Ex-con → returning citizen
• Fat → plus-sized
• Master bedroom → primary bedroom
• Anchor baby → child of noncitizens
And so on... You can think the lake rename is dumb. Fine. Just don’t pretend renaming things is some brand-new crime that only started last week!

I'm not on the left but I'm not MAGA either.
ReplyDeleteThere are several big differences between renaming Lake Ontario or the Gulf of Mexico and 90% of the names you listed there.
Brands and institution rebranded their products on their own. Companies are free to rebrand at any point for whatever reason they think makes sense. Whether it is to appease lefty clients or because they think the older brand is no longer relevant. It is a longstanding practice for brands to change their names. Pepsi used to be Pepsi-Cola, Apple used to be Apple Computer, Subway used to be Pete's Super Submarines.
You may not be aware of this but, Congress passed a bipartisan law in 2020 requiring the Department of Defense to eliminate names, symbols, and displays honoring the Confederate States of America from all military installations. Trump signed that bill into law! It was not Biden or democrats that changed those names. An independent commission was created to review the installations and recommend new, non-Confederate names honoring American war heroes and leaders. By 2023, nine major U.S. Army bases (including the ones you listed) were officially renamed.
Mount McKinley was renamed Mount Denali because that is what EVERYONE in Alaska call it and they still call it Mount Denali. Just like everyone calls the Gulf of America the Gulf of Mexico everywhere else in the world.
Trump is renaming shit to antagonize people he is upset with. He is doing it on a whim and with no justification or reason for the change. Lake Ontario was renamed because he is butthurt that Canadians are not caving. Gulf of Mexico was renamed because he wanted to antagonize his perceived enemies.
All this shit has real costs in dollars that a country running a $4 Trillion deficit can't afford. Signs, websites, documents, maps, etc will have to be changed at real cost to we the people. I didn't pay one $ when the Redskins rebranded.
I'm not going to go into all the "words" you listed because I don't use them and have never heard anyone use them
