The road pictured isn't actually in my neighborhood, but there are literally hundreds of similar streets and roads just like that throughout North Central and North Florida. They're called, appropriately, canopy roads, created by the way the limbs of our Grand Oaks seems to cover the road beneath.
Some roads feel less like a route and more like a room you drive through. The avenue of live oaks in Floral City is one of those. The trees have been reaching toward each other for well over a century, and now their branches meet overhead in a long green tunnel that seems to hush everything beneath it.
Late in the afternoon, especially as the first hint of fall softens the light, the sun slips through the moss and scatters gold across the pavement. Drive it slowly and you notice how the temperature drops a few degrees under the canopy, how the moss sways just barely, how the whole lane feels older and calmer than the world just beyond it.
Trees like these outlast almost everything around them, quietly keeping the shape of a place for generation after generation.
There is one tree in my neighborhood sitting in the middle of the street, and it covers both lanes. It's said to be almost 350 years old.
