This relatively early strip comes at the end of a short story arc, where Calvin's family comes home to discover their house has been burglarized. Their TV and jewelry are missing, but after a brief moment of panic, it turns out Hobbes isn't. Depending on who you choose to believe, either the burglars didn't take him or he scared them off.
While Calvin isn't that bothered by the event, his parents are, and they take center stage for a brief, rare moment to discuss the aftermath. Part of it involves this conversation, about one of the terrible truths of adulthood that everyone has to deal with sooner or later: some of us may have more of a plan than others, but we're all making it up as we go.
That whole story arc isn't important to the bigger issue Watterson raised here. We're all playing it by ear day-to-day, week-to-week. It's how he chose to illustrate that most-common of all approaches to life that demonstrates the greatness of C&H. Juss' sayin'...

They're evacuating my old town in Jersey out of fear of not-so-catastrophic flooding...
Manasquan, NJ officials are urging residents in the borough’s oceanfront neighborhood to voluntarily evacuate as a powerful nor’easter approaches, raising concerns about significant coastal flooding. Borough officials on Friday issued a voluntary evacuation notice for residents of homes closest to the Atlantic Ocean, including homes on First through Fourth streets, as well as Brielle Road.
“It’s is the first time we’ve done this in a long time,” Mayor Mike Mangan said in a video statement. The notice also extends to the back bay, which includes Glimmer Glass Circle, Long Avenue, and Captains Court.
Mangan warned of moderate-to-major flooding in those areas, saying residents near the ocean should consider relocating for “a couple of days.” The mayor said that if the water is high enough, emergency crews may be unable to reach stranded residents.

Mom told me that life is a real crap shoot. you rolled the dice and hope for the best. also try to build a nest egg in case anything does happen. which often does happen. car repair, house repair or your butt needs repair. and some people for some reason get lucky when you do not. just try your best, don't hurt anyone you don't have too and try to help others when you can. but no one really knows what tomorrow will bring. she told me all this over 50 years ago now.

from everyday bullshit. I check the weather, but not the "news" as there is little to nothing I can do about all of the bullshit going on.
First "voluntary" anything I've heard of in NJ. Everything else about the place, it's "mandatory" or "prohibited".
