Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the Sunshine State is moving to become the first in the nation to block taxpayer-funded Temporary Cash Assistance from being spent directly on tattoos, vaping products, pornography, video games, entertainment subscriptions, psychic readings, and other non-essential purchases. The policy is designed to put clear guardrails around cash welfare benefits and keep the focus on helping needy families cover real necessities. The state says the changes will not reduce a family’s eligibility or benefit amount.
Temporary Cash Assistance, often called TCA, is Florida’s cash-benefit program under the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, known as TANF. It is issued through an Electronic Benefit Transfer card, or EBT card, and is intended to help eligible families meet basic needs such as food, clothing, housing, utilities, household items, and personal care. In plain English: taxpayers are meant to be helping families keep the lights on, put food on the table, and provide for children - not bankroll luxuries and entertainment.
Under Florida’s amended plan, TCA benefits will be barred from directly purchasing tobacco, nicotine, and vape products; drugs and intoxicants; pornography; video games; entertainment tickets; theme-park admission; entertainment subscriptions; tattoos; spa services; tanning; and psychic or fortune-telling services.
