Glass is one of the few materials that can be recycled forever. It doesn't break down or lose its strength. A glass bottle from 100 years ago could be melted down and turned into a new bottle today—just as strong and clear as the day it was made. Unlike plastics or paper, which degrade in quality during processing, glass maintains its chemical structure and can be remelted endlessly.
That's because glass is made from natural ingredients like sand, soda ash, and limestone. Recycling it saves energy and reduces waste. It's a simple, circular system that works—if we actually use it.
Using recycled glass (cullet) significantly reduces energy consumption, lowers manufacturing temperatures, and cuts down carbon dioxide emissions.
A material that never wears out, and a reminder that some things are built to last. Like beer glasses and mugs......

But but only fifty years ago we were told that plastic would save the world from unsightly refuse. There is no way they would lie to everyone just to make a little more money.. yes, it is sarcasm. Another good reason to doubt the experts and trust your own common sense.

ReplyDeleteThere are several problems with recycling glass. First is that it must be sorted by color to make anything other than brown glass. That is expensive and difficult. Next it is very heavy to transport. Third, of course, is that it is easily shattered and this adds to the expense of sorting because of the difficulty in handling sharp pieces and small fragments. Finally as with most recycling, the expenses in collection, sorting, and remanufacturing make it cheaper to start with raw materials.

Delete"Glass can be infinitely recycled" .... well, yes, if you want mud colored glass. Otherwise, it is nearly impossible to recycle clear glass, other colors are hard - because all glass has the same properties except color (OK, there are some others that also affect sorting like borosilicate vs lime). This has effectively killed glass recycling. It's far cheaper to make new glass than invest the time to keep the recycling stream clean. My trash facility quit collecting it: no market. And since glass is inert, it has zero deleterious effect in a landfill. Compare glass to steel, copper, aluminum: iron of almost any sort can be separated magnetically from a mixed metal stream. Ditto aluminum (yes, there ARE aluminum magnets). What's left is going to be copper/brass/bronze, worth enough to manually sort. Until that can be done with colors of glass, glass will be worthless as a recycling stream.
