Where you live, mowing your own lawn could be expensive...

Minnesota residents may not be aware of the mowing laws currently in place for the state. From correct disposal to legislation prohibiting road obstruction during yard work, there are a number of laws in effect. Violating these strict rules could result in a hefty fines for households.
One such law that can sting homeowners during the summer is Minnesota Statute 169.42. This littering law prohibits the disposal of grass clippings in the street, with penalties of up to $1,000 and possible jail time.
And if you’re tempted to place your clippings in your trash can instead, be warned this can also cost you. Under Minnesota Statute 115A.931, you cannot place yard waste in your regular trash cans. Intentionally breaking this law could land you with a civil fine of $100 for each instance.

The maximum penalty for this infraction is capped at a whopping $5,000. To dispose of your grass cuttings correctly and avoid hefty fines, homeowners should compost or follow other allowed methods. Similar laws are in place in Colorado, with Denver residents even facing $5,000 biweekly fines for not taking care of their property.

  2. Use a mulching mower and let the clippings disintegrate naturally.

  3. I hire it out. I got tired of yard work years ago.

  4. There is a cost for landfill operation and maintenance. Wasting the space for yard waste is wrong, and forces the need for new landfills sooner than needed. Composting, even if done by the useless government, is more sound than landfilling the green materials. Surely excessive fine amounts, but likely needed to get compliance. Having clippings clog storm drains can lead to flooding or higher maintenance costs. It's your yard, but YOU need to be responsible for the "waste" it generates. It's not a matter of "freedom. " private landfill operator would demand the same as would anyone running watershed management.
