Turns out there's no MLK Blvd anywhere in that town...

In 1887, just north of Orlando, a group of Black citizens did something almost unheard of in the American South.  They founded and governed their own town. Eatonville became one of the first incorporated all Black municipalities in the United States, a place where African Americans held every office, ran every business, and answered to no one but themselves.

Eatonville was more than a town. It was a statement, and a haven. On its shaded dirt streets, families built churches, schools, and shops, and raised their children with a rare sense of freedom and pride during a deeply unjust era. The town's most famous daughter, the writer Zora Neale Hurston, grew up here soaking in its stories and its spirit, and she would later immortalize Eatonville in some of the greatest American literature ever written. 

More than a century later, Eatonville still stands, still proud of its history and fighting to preserve it. It remains a living monument to what a community can build when it is given the chance to shape its own future. The porches, the church bells, and the memory of Zora's voice all endure in the heart of this remarkable little Florida town.
