In March 2019, 54-year-old Michael J. Weirsky was down on his luck. He was unemployed and had just gone through a divorce. Then, everything changed. He bought a Mega Millions ticket at a QuickChek in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, and won the $273 million jackpot.
But the win almost slipped away. Right after buying the ticket, he was distracted by his phone, left it on the counter, and walked out. A stranger found it and gave it to the store clerk, who kept it safe.
When Weirsky returned the next day, he got his ticket back. He didn't realize he’d won until checking the numbers two days later.
The store clerk who held the ticket, Phil Campolo, was later identified. Weirsky said he planned to reward him but kept the amount private. He also said he planned to buy a new pickup truck and a car for his mother. A story of near-miss luck, a kind stranger, and a second chance.
Just one question - how do you stay 'unemployed' for 15 years?

I was unemployed for two weeks back in the 80s. I was able to remain married.

ReplyDeleteBet that wife that was happy to be rid of him regrets not hanging on for just a bit longer.
ReplyDeleteOnce the unemployment lasts more than a year or two, they become un-hireable. No one will take a chance unless there's a really, really good explanation. And that's for even less than a year.
