American retirees spent an average of $5,100 per month in 2024, according to Federal Reserve data. If your budget is lower than that, take heart: GoBankingRates recently published a report on the best small, fast-growing cities where senior adults can live well on half that amount.
The ranking is led by Leesburg, a town in central Florida, where the population has grown by over 50 percent since 2018 to 39,000. More than 28 percent of full-time residents are aged 65 or older, so there’s a strong built-in retiree community, which is enhanced by its proximity to the Villages, one of the world’s largest retirement enclaves. The town’s nearness to the Villages and Orlando also gives its residents access to an outsize network of healthcare providers; UF Health Leesburg Hospital is one of the top hospitals, with an 86 percent patient satisfaction rate.
Nicknamed “The Lakefront City,” Leesburg is surrounded by more than 1,000 lakes in the county alone, and is the perfect spot for fishing, boating, water sports, and waterfront dining. Lake Griffin and Lake Harris are the two major bodies of water in town, where residents have access to a marina with boat slips, along with the beautiful Venetian Gardens.
The 64-acre waterfront park has trails, picnic facilities, and often hosts live music performances. Leesburg is also home to a large three-day bike fest and motorcycle rally each spring, with many more annual festivals and events throughout Lake County.
