A Florida detective’s arrest is the latest case to show how Flock cameras can be turned from a crime-fighting tool into a weapon for personal abuse. Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden says Detective Brandy Almany was fired and criminally charged after an internal audit found what officials called improper and unlawful use of agency databases, including Flock license plate readers. According to the sheriff’s office, the searches were tied to her husband’s ex-wife, not a legitimate investigation, and that is exactly the kind of conduct that turns a “public safety” tool into a private surveillance machine.
The sheriff has now suspended Flock use in the county while the agency audits its system. In plain English, that means the county is pausing the program to figure out who had access, what they searched, and whether the system was being used the way the public was told it would be used.
Don't get me wrong - I am a strong supporter of policing at every level, but this new technology has an insidious back-end that somehow just doesn't sit well with me. It's one thing to blow past a speed trap and get busted. It's a little different when the machines are watching, not people. Juss' sayin'...

That list isn't all Flock cameras are doing. They record bumperstickers, allowing for political profiling..
ReplyDeleteIf they are truly just for traffic, why are they located in parks and playgrounds, on hiking trails, and all sorts of placed vehicles don't go. In HOA's!
And it is unclear how many people and organizations have access to this huge treasure trove of information. Stories of misuse are growing.
Nothing but dragnet surveillance of the entire population. Imagine what the Gestapo or KGB could have done with this.

ReplyDeleteThey are NOT "Flock Cameras". Theay are TELEVISORS, sending everything they see to Big Brother's Thought Police.
ReplyDeleteAny government entity that wants to use the Flock system should have to get a search warrant to look for THAT specific evidence.
ReplyDeleteBeing able t get around the 4th Amendment by letting someone else film you and they just buy the search is wrong.
4 law enforcement people in Atlanta were just fired a couple of weeks ago and facing charges for misusing these things. They need to go.
