A nearby woman immediately called emergency services, telling them that someone had fallen from above and collided with her friend. Both victims were transported to a hospital unconscious and in critical condition. But the outcome was even crazier than the incident itself. The man survived the fall, although he remained unconscious with serious injuries. Inaba, who had done nothing more than be in that exact place at that exact moment, died several hours later from hemorrhagic shock.
Police are still investigating where the man fell from and what caused it. Officials have not cbeenable to figure out whether it was an accident or the guy jumped.
This was not merely a bizarre accident involving a tall building and a guy with bad balance - or just plain unbalanced. It was the sudden loss of a young woman whose ordinary walk with a friend became the final moment of her life.
Just goes to show you - if it ain't something, it's something else...

ReplyDeleteUnlikely. Japan has socialized health care costs so everyone is required to have insurance and out of pocket costs are capped with government paying around 70%. Charges are also capped rather than free market. The system likely functions well enough in an insular, homogeneous society with strong social norms. As Japan very strictly limits immigration, there's little risk that welfare abusers will have any impact on the system.
DeleteA former girlfriend in Baltimore was walking back to work with a co-worker from lunch at a local joint. Suddenly, WHAM, a car making an illegal left turn got hit and rode up on the sidewalk and hit her coworker and smashed him up against a telephone pole. Dead right there. She was pretty traumatized, to say the least. S**t happens, but man, what ill fortune.

ReplyDeleteHe fell on her. She provided some -not much - cushioning, and by sheer luck he didn't do anything fatal. She inherited much of his momentum, and per the report must have had a severe bleed from traumatic injury. Her death was due to extreme blood loss, suggesting that she lost much of her blood volume before hospital (or, possibly, the medical team didn't recognize how big the loss was; not very likely). This is your basic 'bad things happen' accident.
