A controversial proposal in Los Angeles is igniting backlash after Democratic City Council member and mayoral candidate Nithya Raman floated restrictions on backyard barbecues during high wildfire-risk days. Raman’s original public-safety motion included language calling for “a notice to all residents in Red Flag Warning areas to cease all activities that increase risk of fire, such as the use of outdoor barbecues or fire pits.”
The debate quickly spilled into the Los Angeles mayoral race, where Republican candidate Spencer Pratt mocked the proposal online by posting a grilling video captioned “Come and take it,” along with overlay text reading “Happy Smoke 4th.” Pratt, whose own home was destroyed in the Pacific Palisades fires, used the controversy to criticize city leadership as frustration grows over wildfire prevention and public safety policies in California.
Commentators also pushed back against the proposal, arguing recent devastating fires were caused by broader infrastructure and management failures rather than backyard cookouts. Fox News contributor Debra Lea said, “They’re trying to cancel summer in California,” while also blaming “poor leadership and bad decisions” for the state’s wildfire problems.
