The entire State of Commiefornia could learn a thing or two from this new law. Starting July 1, anyone found camping on public land in the state of Indiana will have just 48 hours to move on after a police warning, or risk being charged with a misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days behind bars. The rules were introduced to tackle homeless encampments popping up across the state.
And right away, the Libs are bitching about it for all the wrong reasons. Kerry Thomson, the Dimorat mayor of Bloomington, blasted the law as she claimed it could force desperate people deeper into poverty instead of helping them get off the streets. “I don’t appreciate that bill,” Thomson said, adding the state-imposed deadline has become a “burning platform” forcing cities to act before support systems are fully ready. Indiana gets in excess of $ 30 million a year from the Fed fto waste on failed and failing programs.
Despite these multi-million dollar outlays and a 55% increase in subsidized permanent housing options, Indiana's 'unsheltered' and chronically homeless populations have more than doubled over the last five to ten years.
This has prompted a pivot in policy focus. Recent state polling and legislative efforts indicate a growing push to direct future state and local funds toward on-site mental health and addiction treatment (Doesn't work - why bother), alongside enforcing bans on unsheltered street camping.
